Lola and Lucy Henderson-Thomas

June 2006

  • Fri, Jun 30, 2006 12:40 AM

Lucy has pinkeye and an ear infection...She went to the doc the other day, and she weighs nearly 20 pounds at 9 months. She is in the 95th percentile for height, and 65th for weight (and head size). The doc says that she has big teeth! I agree...think her nickname will be Bugs. : )

Lola has been my pal - we stay up late watching TV. Good thing Juliet will finally be back from Spain this weekend; get us all back on schedule. Lots to do before the move!

When visiting Grandma's house, Lola heard her cousins saying "Daddy" this and "Daddy" that. At one point in time during the evening, she ran to me and said "Mommy, I want a Daddy." "Well," I reply, "That's going to be problematic." I told her she could call Uncle "Daddy" if she wanted to (Don't they do that in the south? ; )), and that she had a Papa in England. She seemed to forget about it as soon as she asked, as she scurried away to continue playing with her cousins.

Today Lola asked if I could go with her to England. After she asked, she said please. Breaks my heart. : /

Lola hasn't been going to bed at her regular time; she's been staying up til 9pm or so. Today she took a reaaaaaaaaaaaaaally long nap, which was fine with me, because I was able to catch an hour nap as well!

Juliet needs to come home soon; I'm cutting corners on healthy eating habits for the kiddies.
    But we're having fun.

A Milestone! Lucy stood up today (er, yesterday morning - June 25) by holding onto her crib! Of course, when I saw her holding herself up proudly, I also freaked out that I can't possibly lower the crib by myself safely. So tonight I'm going to line the floor with a bunch of pillows, just in case.

    Juliet, come home soon!

Yesterday Lola was appreciating her friend Frankie's shoes. She woke up saying she wanted to wear green shoes (she has none), so while she was at school, I went shopping for some shoes for the girls (Lola has had a growth spurt, can barely fit into any of her shoes). I found similar shoes for Lola, but about 2 sizes too big. But that didn't matter. She was so estactic to have them that she had to put them on IMMEDIATELY and run around in them. Back and forth in the hallway. It reminded me of when I was little and I got new shoes and thought I could jump higher and run faster. She is so happy with the new shoes, even if they make her trip.

I bought her two pair of shoes, actually. The first ones were "Crocs" and the 2nd pair are a pair of cute Nikes. Lola liked opening up the Nike box, had a look of "wow" in her eyes when she picked them up and inspected them. But then her face relaxed, and she had a look of disappointment on her face. She looked at me and asked, "Where's Dora?"

Since they were not Dora shoes, she put them back in the box, and ran away with the other new pair of shoes on her feet - the ones that are too big.

Last night, Lola and Lucy joined me for a 7pm meeting I had at the office. Thankfully, Lola's friend Frankie was there, and together they played and watched DORA (though I was interrupted with MOMMY! I WANT MILK! and MOMMY! I HAVE TO CHANGE MY DIAPER!). Lucy hung out in the meeting room, where she zoomed in on the pizza that we were eating. She snapped it up, shoved it in her mouth and chomped away. She couldn't have been happier. CPK BBQ Chicken Pizza. A first.

EXHAUSTING. Love the kiddies, but taking care of them before and after a full day's work --without Juliet around -- is just EXHAUSTING.

As I was putting Lucy in her carseat this morning, Lola went outside to wait for us and I suddenly heard her scream.

The short story is that she got tangled up in Rooben's coiled/steel leash (that's tied to a post outside so he doesn't jump over our fence). When I ran outside, I saw Lola stuck on the ground, leash around her feet, and a considerable amount of blood on her face, and a gash on her leg. Poor thing; her face is really kinda messed up (I wonder if this will be the kind of thing that scars her face permanently?).

Once I wiped away the blood, she asked for a)Elmo bandaids, b) Mama, c) Milk and d) a popsicle. In that order. Then she proceeded to tell me that she didn't want to go to school, and that she wanted to stay home with me. So sad.

Tonight when I picked her up from school, she couldn't be happier. "Mother Goose" (a crazy woman with a big pink floppy hat) came to sing and dance with the kids today. And when Lola was playing outside, the sprinklers were turned on (much to Lola's delight - she was a soaking, muddy mess when I picked her up). When we got in the car, Lola asked to hear "her" song (which is Elton John's "Your Song" -- that's all she wants to listen to, over and over and over again), and asked her if I had any special treats for her (I did; chocolate milk!). She was in good spirits all night...

but that scar on her face... Ouch!

Lola has this funny way about her. She is so playful and fun when we are alone, and then when she is with other people, she just clams up and becomes very serious.

She sings "Dora the Explorer", and has changed "Dora" to "Mommy." : )

When I try to explain complicated (or not so) things to her, she hesistates and says "Oh" -- I'm not sure she understands, but she pretends to, anyways.

How can you fall off a low-to-the-ground tricycle? Lola does it about once a week, and I've never caught her doing it. But the thing looks untippable, so I'm really curious as to how she does it. Does she throw herself off?

Well, the key is to keep busy. While Juliet is gone, the idea is to beat the heat we're experiencing in Burbank right now, and go do something entertaining for the kids. First up: Griffith Park pony rides! Turns out Lola chickened out -- she thought the ponies were too big. So we took the train instead; it was a big hit. Also included in the "fun" was a shopping trip to Ralph's, Target, the gas station, and (drum roll, please) the LAUNDROMAT, as our washing machine broke. Afterwards, we went to celebrate by walking to Baskin Robbins, conveniently located in the same shopping mall as the laundromat. And Lola dropped her rasberry sorbet. Twice.

So sorry for Juliet - who is in Spain for the next couple of weeks - but happy for Lucy who took her first few crawls this past week! Just baby crawls - but crawls nonetheless!

This is not to say she can't make it from one room to the other in our house, though. Our Lucy is very adept at slithering across the room, using her forearms to pull the rest of her body with her. She is also good at yoga poses -- getting up on all 4s and then doing different poses. The other night she kept saying Mama in the middle of the night (we think she was teething)...

When I picked up Lola (and Lucy) from school, she had regular underwear on! She's getting good at using the toilet, so Lucy's infant teacher (who used to be Lola's infant teacher) bought her Dora underwear and "Little Pony" underwear! And at home, she'll use the toilet without asking for a jellybean. : )

Lola's new favorite show is "Jeopardy" -- she asks to watch it.

Lola has become adept at being a tattletale. We kinda like it. She tells us when our dog Rooben has hopped onto the bed, or the couch, or when Lucy might be getting into something that she shouldn't.

Jellybeans. Lola is now bribed with jellybeans that were left over from Easter. Juliet always said that we weren't going to bribe our babies with food, but if we want Lola to use the toilet at home (she has no problem with it at school), we have to give her jellybeans. One for pee, two for poop. Today she informed Mama that Mommy gets two jellybeans, too.

Lucy is saying "Mom" and "Mama" pretty regularly. So sweet to hear her say that. She stood up by herself at Alison and Marcos' house, too. She is so wiggly! She scoots around so much that we just can't leave her alone for a second. She is entranced with a tall piece of furniture that she likes to pull the bottom drawer, and she is able to get a sliding piece of plastic off so she can access her (er, Lola's) blocks. We think she's brilliant. : ) Brilliant and meaty.

Today we went to Marina del Rey to visit our friends Marcos and Alison. They have a little boy, Kennedy, who is 4, so Lola had a little friend to play with.

We had a yummy time at the Venice Farmers' Market where LOLA RODE A PONY FOR THE FIRST TIME (she loved it, and, sadly, no pictures...), and then we spent the afternoon at the beach. Both the girls dipped their feet into the ocean and Mama went swimming (and Mommy watched as the lifeguard asked Juliet to come back into shore because the current was too strong). Lola had fun building sandcastles and Lucy had fun eating sand. Both girls conked out early tonight. We love that!!!!!

I can't believe it. I succumbed. Lola now has a tiara and some big princess-y clip on earrings. I can't believe it.

We were invited over to a friend/neighbor/Lola's little friend's house today to swim! Lucy loved the pool, as did Ms. Lola -- jumping off the pool steps into Mama's arms, jump after jump after jump. Mom took her to the deep end near the waterfall, where Lola got very nervous. Still, it was a fun playdate with Julian and Kimberly - and Little Lucy Goose-y Puddin' & Pie feel asleep on the walk home, and Lola went right to her bed to take a nap, too. Good thing. It's horribly hot in Burbank today - and their rooms have some nice air conditioning heading their way.

Over Memorial Day weekend, in honor of my (Stephanie) birthday, Juliet bought a hot air balloon ride for her and me. My mom and sister Sue agreed to watch Lucy and Lola while Juliet and I were away in Temecula.

The kids had a blast in Newport Beach, by the ocean, in the water, in the pool, playing.

And Juliet and I had a nice time - we went to a movie (!), had dinner, drinks, and took a road that said CLOSED in bright lights and cones (the detour would have taken at least another hour. At least! So we decided to take the chance). So, bright as we are, we took the dark, scary, lonesome road anyway, and beat the lies of the transporation department. Alas; no road closure...just lots of cones and stars in the sky!

Anyway, to make a long story short -- Juliet fainted on the balloon ride. I didn't take any pictures (what was I thinking???), but some shots of the trip are posted. And it doesn't have any thing to do with the kids, but I posted it anyways.
