Lola and Lucy Henderson-Thomas

March 2008

Lola has been begging to try out for the school talent show. She wants to show off her dance techniques and have people clap for her.

As it turns out, I took her to tryouts (and she begged for me to put her in her dance clothes, which I ended up doing!) and she totally balked. But then she re-begged to try out again. We might have her try to dance on stage with her friend Nisa, who was also there.

    Two Things -- Lucy related.

    1. I have grown accustomed to putting Lucy in her crib as part of a "time out" when she starts acting up (her bedroom door doesn't lock, and she won't stay in a corner). The nice thing is that she usually screams at the top of her lungs for a few minutes, then passes out because she's so tired.

So yesterday I put Lucy in her crib for being a little too sassy, and I stayed by her door as she screamed, and then complete silence -- which I took for sleep. I walked away, proud of such quick results.

I went into the study and not moments later I heard Lola say "hi!", which I thought was kinda weird -- but figured she was probably playing with her dolls/stuffed animals.

When I got up to check on the situation, there was Lucy, playing with Lola. Lucy looked at me and said "Hi!" with a smile, as if nothing had happened at all. I went to her and asked, "Lucy...how did you get out of the crib?" and she said, non-chalantly, "I swung."

    2. Today Lucy ate at least 4 turkey hot dogs, right in a row. FOUR (possibly 5). She had the dogs with two cups of milk and a dash of carrots and some grapes, to round out the meal.

The kids are good; Lola, especially, has been very polite and kind and listens to me.

Lucy makes me laugh, though it is she who also frustrates me most. She just doesn't have that whole "hall monitor" presence that Lola has always had (ie: "Safety violation, Mom!" when I don't wear a seatbelt).

I think Lola would sit and watch TV all day if she could; Lucy not so much (but she does love a good Diego or Dora or Scooby Doo show!).

Lucy also taunts her sister at all available moments -- I've had to tell Lola repeatedly that Lucy is only two and that she shouldn't listen to her taunts!

We've signed Lola up for soccer camp in June, when I'm away in Zambia. I loved soccer camp, and hope she does, too.

Lola can write her name! This is pretty new, and we're excited about it -- and Lola is proud of it, too, as she should be. : )

Lola has also taken her kindergarten screening, and passed. So she's going to kindergarten next year -- one of the youngest! But she is very excited about it since she loves Pre-K and is pretty much bored with daycare.

She also looooooooooooooooves unicorns still. I have her enrolled in a ceramics class, and she keeps just wanting to paint another clay unicorn.

Lola's other big thing is that she is BEGGING to be in the elementary school talent show. She wants to DANCE. Of course, the request surprised Juliet and me, as well as Lola's Pre-K teacher, because Lola is one of the most shy kids in the Pre-K class, but she really wants to do it.

Lola told me that she just wanted to do some twirls/spins, and that'd be it, so I was inclined to let Lola do it. I'm just fearful that it might be traumatic for her...!

So I took Lola and Lucy to the Hotchkiss dance studio and I asked Lola to show me what she wanted to do for the talent show. And she did what only can be described as ... well, a modern/contemporary/free form dance that neeeeever ended.

    Ut oh.

Then I took the girls to the Hotchkiss auditorium with it's big stage, and Lola asked for me to introduce her. Which I did...."Ladies and gentleman, next up is LOLA HENDERSON-THOMAS!!!!!"

And then she walks/prances onto the stage, nods toward the imaginary audience, and starts more of her... um, "dancing". It was really sweet, but I am trying to figure out how to have her stick with the original idea of a few twirls, and then she's done! She bowed to the audience when she was done, and pranced off stage.

(Meanwhile, Lucy is also trying out the stage, talking VERY loudly and singing a made-up song about Lucy being on a big stage and reaching high into the sky!)

Lola wanted me to keep introducing her, so she could dance and I could clap, and I did so, using the opportunity to tell her what she should stick with (Twirls!).

We were finally done (Lola, I fear, thinks she perfected her routine while Lucy wanted to stay and still run across the stage singing songs), but I am still wondering what to do about our little Lola performing in front of a crowd of HUNDREDS.

She is sooooooooo sensitive -- she hates if people laugh at something she did, even if she was meaning to be funny. What if they laugh at her at the show??

    Lucy, Lucy, Lucy.

I love her spirit and don't want to dampen it, but she is a handful.

She repeatedly runs away from me -- in parking lots, at the bus stop near a "busy" (Lakeville standards) road, at school when I pick her up (she runs into the fields, and I have to chase her, as Lola sits obediently in the car), in the store.

Of course, her running away even after I say, "STOP!!!" makes me nervous for her safety, so I'm thinking about leashin' her up. I hate to be that mother, but I seriously don't know what to do. NOTHING has worked.

Lucy has also been "fresh" at school with her teachers, and has bitten a boy twice at school, which makes her on the cusp of being suspended from daycare.

Lucy remains a secret snacker, too, and I can often find her either in a cupboard or hiding under the table eating something. Tonight when I was putting Lola's pajamas on, she quietly left her room, went to the kitchen, PULLED A CHAIR TO THE FRIDGE, OPENED UP THE FREEZER UP ON TOP, AND PULLED OUT GIRL SCOUT COOKIES. When I found her, she was under a table in the living room, shoving as many cookies as she could in her mouth before I could take the bag away.

Tonight I made tacos for the girls (Mom, not the same as you made 'em, unfortunately!) -- a feat unto itself.

They went over like a lead balloon.

I diced the lettuce, tomatoes, avocados and put them into their respective bowls. I got cheese and sour cream too. But the girls didn't eat the tacos, the stuff on their plates. Instead, they reached for the bowls, and Lucy ate ALL of the iceberg lettuce (she's a Thomas; she asked for more!) and cheese.

Lola had the tomatoes, avocado and sour cream (blech!).

But I figured at least, they got sooooooooome nourishment.
